About Gateway Installation

This article explains the best practice for Gateway installation and placement.

How does it help you?

Our wireless gateway lets you bring industrial WiFi to areas without or where your WiFi does not reach your FitMachines.

Ensuring you install your gateway accurately and in the optimal position ensures your gateway is reporting correctly and your FitMachines receive the best possible coverage.

How does it work?

Good Gateway Location

  • You will need 100 - 240V power. Pick a location that is 1m (or less) from an active power outlet.
  • Try to install the gateway where there is good cellular reception. You can check the reception in the area by using your phone as an indicator.
  • Try to position the gateway in a central location to where the FitMachines will be. We recommend installing Gateways within 20-30 metres of each FitMachine. Typically, the higher you can install the gateway, the better. This is because the gateway can provide sufficient coverage for sensors up to 100 metres away with a clear, unobstructed line of sight. However, this is significantly reduced in congested plant rooms and processing plants.

Take5. Consider safety before installing!

  • Personal protective equipment: Wear high visibility clothing, safety boots, safety glasses & ear protection.
  • Slips, trips & falls: Ensure good lighting. Be aware of stairs & trip hazards.
  • Confined space: Ensure everyone follows confined space procedures & required training.
  • Working at height: Ensure everyone follows working at height procedures & required training.
  • Moving equipment: Ensure all machines have safety guards. If not, do not proceed. Inform your onsite manager to ensure guards are in place before installation.
  • Loose equipment: Ensure the mounting method is solid. Use an additional strap if required.
  • Cables: Ensure cables are tagged, neat & out of the way.

To install the MOVUS Gateway, you'll need to match the antennas' labels to the ports' labels, attach the magnets to the back face and plug into a general power outlet (GPO). The gateway will start in around a minute, indicated by the green light on the front face.

MOVUS has two different Gateway types. Please find the kind you have and follow the step by step instructions below.

Orange Box Gateways

Gateway assembled

Things you will need

  • 1x orange box Gateway
  • 2x WiFi/BT antennas (these are interchangeable)
  • 1x WAN/WAN1 antenna
  • 1x Magnet rail (optional)
  • 1x IEC plug adaptor (optional)

Instructions

  1. Attach the antennas to the gateway. The antennas should have labels on them so that you can match them up. If they don't, the two antennas that are the same go on the WiFi and BT ports, and the third antenna goes on either the WAN port or the WAN1 port, depending on the ports you have on your gateway.
  2. Attach the magnet rail to the gateway. If you are mounting the gateway using a different method, please skip to step 4. The gateway should now look like this:

  3. Find a good location to install the gateway. Refer to the above section, 'Good Gateway Location' for more information.
  4. Plug the gateway into the power outlet. Ensure the cable is neat & out of the way. After about a minute, the gateway should show a flashing green light on the front.
  5. After you're sure the gateway works with that power outlet, mount the gateway safely with the antennas pointing down. If using the magnet rail, be careful of pinching your fingers.

You're good to go!

Sierra Wireless Gateways

Things you will need

  • 1x Sierra Wireless Gateway
  • 2x WiFi antenna
  • 1x Cellular antenna
  • 1x GNSS antenna
  • Power cable

Instructions

  1. Screw the WiFi antenna onto WiFi ports 1 and 2 labelled on the back of the gateway.
  2. Screw the Cellular antenna onto the cellular port labelled on the back of the gateway.
  3. Screw the GNSS antenna onto the GNSS port labelled on the back of the gateway.
  4. Find a good location to install the gateway. Refer to the above section, 'Good Gateway Location' for more information.
  5. Plug the gateway into 240V power. Ensure the cable is neat & out of the way. After about a minute, the gateway should show a solid green light on the front.
  6. After you're sure the gateway works with that GPO, then mount the gateway safely, with the antennas pointing down. If using the magnets, be careful of pinching your fingers.

You're good to go!
